Carbon dosing and low PH Help

by Fat starfish on 10-26-2011 at 03:07 AM
Hi everyone,

Recently I have been having some problems with my tank. My nitrates were on the rise, they ended up getting to 40 ppm, I did constant large water changes and started using bio pellets but things just got worse. Since then I removed the bio pelltets and went back to basics. I ended up discovering that my sand bed was the cause of my nitrate problems. Slowly I removed my sand bed and after all of it was gone my nitrates have fallen to below 10ppm.

I also have

Bio Pellet help

by Fat starfish on 09-15-2011 at 04:28 AM
Hey everyone,

Need some help. I've been running Biopellets in a phosban reactor for a month now with no reduction in nitrates. Flow is strong in the reactor.

My parameters are:
Nitrate 25ppm salifert
phosphate 0.00ppm Hanna
Alk 8.0 Hanna
Calcium 430 Salifert
Nitrite 0 API
Ammonia 0 API
Mag 1350 Salifert

The tank is about 3 years old. Nitrates have always been around the 25ppm, I have good water flow, two MP40's, very

North Indonesia Dive holiday

by Fat starfish on 12-08-2010 at 03:40 PM
Hey guy's just got back from a magical week in North Indonesia. We went to the Bunaken Marine Park for an amazing dive holiday. Water was incredible! Visibility was between 20 and 40 meters. The reef is really healthy. Amazingly the water temp is a constant 29 degrees during the day and 28 at night. Goes to show that as long as your water chemistry is stable all corals will adapt. I also brought some water back with me, here are the results.

KH 7
Calcium 400

Calcium reactor advice

by Fat starfish on 11-06-2010 at 08:41 PM
Hi everybody.

I need some advice on buying a calcium reactor. Could I please get some recommendations on brands / models. Never had one before, I'm getting sick and tired of constantly adding calcium and carbonate hardness. From my understanding I will also need a controller and C02? My expectations would be for it to control my calcium and KH levels. We are also going to Europe for 6 weeks, so I need a solution so that I can just get someone top off RO and not have to worry about

SPS Corals

by Fat starfish on 08-08-2010 at 09:03 AM
Hey guy's,

I'm new to keeping SPS corals. A few day's ago I picked up a couple of Acro's and Milli's, I live in Sydney Australia, you wouldn't believe how hard it is for us to buy SPS, all our collectors prefer to ship them to you guy's, rather than to sell to local people, must be better money? Any way, my question is, would I be correct in saying that if my SPS are showing polyp extension then they are happy? I currently have them sitting at the bottom of the tank. I can see that
