As summer approaches, we need to plan ahead right now to maintain stable water temperatures. Weekly, I do a livestream discussion on my youtube channel where I interact with about 100 hobbyists. This video is about an hour long, and we talk about a lot of important points that can help you keep your reef healthy and safe.

Somatic has a line of in-sump protein skimmers that should take care of many reef tanks. This one is rated for tanks 40g to 120g, and costs less than $200 online. Designed as a space-saver skimmer, the footprint is 9" x 9" x 22.5" tall with an internal SICCE pump. The entire unit can be disassembled for easy cleaning. It runs quietly, efficiently, and uses 18w of power. With a 2-year warranty, I really like it and can easily recommend it to others. Matter of fact, I'm going to keep it on that aquarium for the time being. ...

When I first got the AquaMaxx Biopellet Reactor, I was very interested in how it worked because the demonstration unit on display showcased something unseen by other similar devices. Unlike its counterparts, this one causes the media to spin at a strong rate -- the pellets orbiting a vertical riser tube provide one-way directional flow. It looked really neat, but I didn't know how the media would do under such conditions.

The reactor itself is made of acrylic and PVC fittings. The inlet and outlets are glued into place, ...

I haven’t been involved in this hobby very long compared to other folks but learned very quickly how much of a pain it can be to eradicate, or try to eradicate pests such as Aiptasia, Majanos, Bubble Algae, zoa eating asterinas, and Marine Ich. When I started, I did what I’m sure all of us have done at one time or another: just drop things in the tank and hope for the best. I recently upgraded from a 70g to a 260g tank and decided never again! Unfortunately, everything I found online regarding QT setups mainly dealt with fish only setups, bare bones systems, or that were more of a temporary solution. ...

I've had the 120w 14k Evolution LED for just over three months now and I have enjoyed it. There are a few things I would love to be different, but in my opinion for the price of this unit you can't go wrong.

The fixture itself is attractive. 119 1 watt LEDs (60 blue, 59 white) are arranged well so that there is nice even coverage across your tank. No "stripes" or "spotlights" of different color lighting. Although early reviews suggested that the fans were very loud, this issue seems to have been resolved before my model was produced. The fans keep the unit cool and are nearly silent. The outside of the fixture is powder coated black and looks modern and attractive hanging above the tank.
