October club meeting (DFWMAS)

Rate this Entry
This month, our club meeting featured a visiting speaker. Steven Pro talked to us about lighting, delving into some of the more specific features that we should consider. It was interesting, such as why some bulbs are blue while others are not. He pointed out that a bulb with a lot of blue is actually a bulb without reds and yellows.

69 people showed up that night.

The raffle had one of my RO/DI systems, an Oceanic Sump and a big skimmer, along with other goodies. One prize was 2-tickets to the Dallas World Aquarium.

It was a fun night, like always.

What size of groups do you have at your meetings? Also you will likely have to approach potential sponsors, it takes time to get a whole lot of things donated. Also sometimes you or someone else will have to break down and buy things to get it going. If your meetings are small it will be tough to get a sponsor willing to donate. If you and a few other people donate a few items and get attendance up then invite a sponsor to come to a meeting and use it to show them people are there. Make sure that if you do have a sponsor even a tiny one that you print something up for the attendee's to take home with their name address and phone number and a voiced thanks to any sponsors during the meetings will help as well.

Having things donated so that you can have a raffle involves scratching someone back so they can return the favor so to speak. By showing a potential sponsor that you appreciate the sponsors you already have they will be more interested in doing things for your members and as you gain more things at your meetings in turn your membership and attendance will grow. But even if things do work out you have to continue pursuing it, if you get lax attendance as well as membership will fall and sponsors will go away.

BTW what group is it that you are meeting with?

we have 2 sponsors but they havent donated anything since i have been a member...... (2 years+)
at my yearly meeting, we had 40+ people. this year, i hope to have the same or more!
and i am dipping in my pocket for items to raffle and frag stash to offer in the raffle as well......

If you can get each attendee to bring a frag, those can be raffled off to raise a little cash for the club. Most (if not all) of the items on our raffle table were purchased for the raffle. I donated the RO/DI system as part of my sponsorship agreement with the club.
