A custom sump for one of my customers

Lately, I've had to build some big sumps. I recently had to make a sump for a 500g system, and thought I'd share a few pictures of the final product.









This sump is 60" x 28" x 20", and the layout is a T-design. The water enters the skimmer section and refugium zones, then pour into the center and channel out the corridor in behind the two big zones. Two small external pumps will push the water back up to the display.

The skimmer section is 23" x 24" in size, and the refugium is roughly the same although taller to provide more volume.

Reactors fit between the skimmer and refugium section to run carbon and GFO.

This sump was constructed with 3/8" Acrylite GP (cast acrylic).

Here are two pictures describing the sump layout and flow pattern. Water enters the sump in the skimmer section's bubble tower as well as the far right side of the refugium zone.

    WOW! Are you able to ship custom sumps to New Jersey? Is there a max size/weight that I could order? I might have you make my sump for my upcoming build! Looking at a ~150g 60''x24to30''x20''to24'' tank. Let me know.

    Melev.. your sumps are awesome.. always loved them. Your just the sump god.. lol. How does someone go about getting acrylic like that?... I don't know where to look up here. It would be cool to build one eventually though.

    Chris, the limit with Fedex Ground is 165" total inches and 70 lbs. That means Girth + Length, including the 4" of padding on all six sides. The Model G-modified is the biggest I can ship, measuring in at 54 x 17 x 16 and allows for an external pump like a Sequence Dart. Anything larger would likely be damaged because of the lack of padding around it while trying to stay inside 165".

    I'm about to ship a sump on a pallet for the first time, but the customer did the shipping part so I don't know what it cost. That sump will be 60" x 24" x 16" and is another new layout. I'll post pictures of it soon. I'll ask what the bill was.

    Look up "Plastics" in your local yellow pages, or google some places like NationalPlastics.com to purchase it and have it shipped. I've got at least 3 companies in the Dallas / Fort Worth area that supplies acrylic. Home Depot has some pieces but usually they aren't big enough and you end up with waste. I purchase sheets 4' x 8' all the time.

    You can often get a pretty good rate especially if someone is driving somewhere anyway. A lot of OTR drivers will also pick something up when they are not running with a full load for some extra cash.

    I actually am signed up as a shipper with Uship, and watch for stuff coming out of Oklahoma City that I can have a little fun with. I drive long distances a lot of times. Drove straight through from Lawton to Las Vegas earlier this year and drove from Lawton to Austin and back to pick up a friends daughter and her stuff as well as load up a couple vehicles last year. Did that in less than 24 hours, LOL. My landlord at the time was stunned and bet I couldn't do it/make it. . . swore I would have to stop and sleep.
