Salmon Run 2010

Rate this Entry
This past long weekend we packed up our dogs and made the 8 hour car trip from home in Alberta to British Columbia. We went to help out a friend with her cabin build, and timed our visit perfectly to see the salmon run in the Shuswaps on Thanksgiving long weekend.

We walked up and down the river, escaped the tourists, and generally had a good time. The fish are very vibrant, and its beautiful to watch, however it is stinky. I barely remember going when I was a kid with my Mum once, I think I was around 4 or 5. It was just as awesome the second time around. I'd highly recommend a stop off if you're travelling through B.C. at the right time.

I imagine the smell must be from all the dying salmon..

That's awesome! All my years in Alaska I've only seen a humpy spawing run like that once.

I just moved from the Seattle area and I already miss the sight of spawning Sockeye Salmon. The fall colors in the trees and bright red Sockeye are an amazing combination. Thanks for the pictures!

    I'm happy you like them.

We spent quite a few hours wandering, and saw a lot of interesting sights. I do have a lot of photos though of the not so lucky fish. It was a great experience though, nothing like sitting out on a fallen tree in the middle of a river watching all these vividly coloured fish swim below you.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing! This is something I've never got to see in person.
