DETANE's 260 Reef

Rating: 4 votes, 5.00 average.
Hi everybody, first time posting here. After many tanks I finally decided that custom was the way to go. I called up my friends at P.F.I. (Plastic Fabricators), who are the same guys who build for http://www.aquatic2000.com/. I went with a 72x30x27 euro, 1" acrylic (front/back), 3/4" sides and bottom, built in over flow (one 2" drain, two 1" rtns). I also had them build me a steel stand (72x30x37). I built a skin for it and the rest is history.
Pictures say a thousand words.

Tank:
260gl Acrylic custom tank (euro)
40gl glass custom sump w/ refugium
Steel custom stand w/ custom skin

Lighting:
ATI Power Module 60" w/ 10 lamps
1. AquaBlue +
2. Fiji Purple
3. AquaBlue +
4 AquaBlue +
5. Aquablue Special
6. AquaBlue +
7. AquaBlue +
8. AquaBlue +

(2) MP40's w/battery backup supply
JBJ 1000w Titanium heater w/controller
JBJ Auto top Off w/maxi-jet pump and 30gl container.
Great White Magnet w/ custom microfiber sleeve cover.
BM Dosser w/ (3) containers
Puratek 200 GPD RO/DI w/ 55gl storage tank.

Live stock:

Mystery Wrasse
Black Cap Basslet
ORA Black and White Ocellaris Clownfish (pair)
Orange Ocellaris Clownfish
Mandarin Dragonet Goby
(5) Reef Chromis
Diamond Goby
Pyramid butterflyfish
(2) Purple queen Anthias
Barlett Anthias
2 fish I cant ID.
Maxima Gold Clam
(3) CoCo tube warms
(3) brian coral
Lots of coral.

Build pics.

Skin, I used:
• 3/4" MDF.
• Alkaline Paint (marine safe . marine grade).
• Rather than placing the skin on the sides of the tank directly to the tank, I left a 7" space to make room for the MP40's and any other wiring than
needed to be hidden. Also built an interior panel to hide the wires and run them through small holes (cleaner look).
•The 2 front panels are magnetically attached for full access to the sump area.
• open top canopy (looks cool) (less heat retention).
• Gas Shock spring to lift the front of the canopy (Marine grade stainless steel Shock)
• MDF elevated 2" off the floor (in case water spills it wont damage the wood.

STAND:

• Steel stand with no open ends (Protect from rust)
• 3/4" Plywood for sump area & top.
• Alkaline Primer & Paint w/ Varnish (Marine grade)

This system was setup about 6 months ago. But most of the live stock and equipment came from the previous 180gl tank which I sold.

Awesome!!! I love the whole setup. Your rockwork is lovely too! Your tank is absolutely beautiful! Hmmm... What else can I say, but good job! I can't wait for future pics when corals grow out more. ;-)

Here is the Coral growth in the last 3 months.. Keep in mind these where frags on frag plugs. I had 2.5 months on MH.. And Now 0.5 on T5's.
2 months on a Ca reactor and now 1 month of Dosing with pump.
You can see there are also small frags I made and put on a shelf rock.

This Purple Monticap below is 6 months growth. The frag was given to me by a member of socalireefs "bullitr".

There are a couple of new frags pieces I added about 1 month ago. Those are still on frag plugs and adjusting to the tank. I had a lot of reefers tell me I should have purchased large colonies so my tank did look so bare, but I wanted to see things grow from frags so I could better understand what works and what doesnt.

Thank you for the warm welcome. I learned a lot from your site Melev. I remember staying up late reading and reading and reading as much as possible before I made the jump to sps.

Thanks.. Yeah those containers came in handy and look a lot better than plastic jugs. They hold about 1.3 gallons of liquid and cost about $40 each. But recommend mixing the solutions in a plastic jugs first, then once the solutions stabilize transferring them to the acrylic containers.

FYI, you can post all of your information in your original entry instead of your replies, Detane. Let me know if you need any help. Next time you have an entry, you will create a new blog (new topic title as well) and your previous blog entries will appear on the right side of the screen in a box. People can subscribe to your blog via email, which is different from 'build threads' that many of us have used in the past.

Detane, I would like to know more about your cabinetry? I too have built a custom stand but am struggling with how to "dress it up" on the outside.
    Thanks,
