Spawning event

As I shared recently, I decided to treat my reef for Cyano with Chemi-Clean. It's been about 48 hours so far. To do so, I had to shut down the skimmer for 72 hours, and take the carbon reactor offline as well. That way the meds aren't taken out of the water too soon, which kill the cyano bacteria.

Whilst this is going on, I noticed on Saturday morning that the tank was a little cloudy or hazy. Looking at one of the Bubble Tip Anemones (BTA), it looked like it had been spawning. Not a big deal. The haze was light; the anemone had pumped out its smokey sperm into the system. Still, with no filtration running, the only thing that would take it out would be filter feeders.

Saturday evening, I broke down my calcium reactor and set it back up with new media. This pumped some dust from the media into the return section, which would make the system cloudy again for a little while. With the reactor running rather spotty lately, I figured the boost of calcium drifting through would only help.

Another hour later, the tank seemed even more cloudy. This was unexpected because the dust should have settled out. So I looked at the anemones again, and all three of them were spawning into the reef. The tank's moonlights were the only light, but I couldn't see in much more than 10" into the display. This picture is a little misleading. It wasn't as clear as my Nkon indicates.

Some fish were unsettled and took cover. Others swam about. Here are two of the Gudgeon Gobies, possibly snacking on the stuff.

And here are those BTAs. Look at the mouth, which is pursed and poking out.

With the flash

What to do? No skimming, no filter floss, no filter socks, and another day of meds still running to kill the cyano.

I went up to the front tank to see what was going on. Its light had turned off 3 hours earlier, so I flipped on the ceiling light switch. As soon as I saw this, I ran for the camera because I knew this was a truly unique experience that would not soon be repeated.

I was so excited, just trying to wrap my brain around what was happening. In the main reef, three bubble tips were spawning sperm into the water. The 20g angled tank is plumbed into the same system, and the Rose BTA responded in turn with a massive clutch of eggs!!!

Everyone always states how huge this anemone is, but look at it now:

The egg cluster snagged on a Gorgonian branch, and the flow in the tank was slowly breaking it up into the system. I watched in fascination, wondering if anyone had ever raised anemones from sperm and eggs. I can't think of anyone at the moment, but surely some have done so by now, right?

The entire time I'm taking pictures and trying to shoot video, in the background I'm hearing the soundtrack from the Discovery Channel's show Life. It was like my reef's event had a commentator documenting it for the future.

My reef is a cloudy mess. The oxygen level must surely be taking a hit, although the ORP hasn't dropped significantly. Since the skimmer is offline, I decided to drop in a huge airstone into the reef hooked up to a good-sized air pump to push oxygen into the water for the night. Normally, ORP drops down to about 316 or so. It's at 279 at the moment.

I just mixed up 55g of saltwater this evening for the upcoming water change. I'm currently trying to decide if I need to act now or leave things be. The corals are definitely feasting on the anemone's exchanges, and the fish have retreated for the night.

Here's a simple video taken tonight.

Marc, that's really cool! I don't think I'd panic yet, you've got a large stable system, so worst case you'll get a little nitrate spike and maybe a little algae. But the big question, are those fertilized eggs going to disperse and take over you tank with lots of baby anenomes?

That is really cool Marc. I am curious as to what is needed to raise anemones from eggs?

I tried to get some pictures of corals eating the eggs, like the acans in the front tank.

I turned on the skimmer and lowered the water level as much as I could so it just adds air - no collection cup.

Here are a few more pictures after a few more hours.

These sweepers are longer than I've ever seen this Acan put out.

The Rose is taking shape slowly.

I scooped out some of this stuff with a net.

This is the airstone I'm running overnight.

Congrats Marc! Such a neat thing to experience. That acan is probably the same species as the "orange crush" I had and YES those sweepers are deadly little suckers. My $70 orange crush killed my $250 acan. I'm interested to see if your system will naturally raise the babies. I had a mysid shrimp colony in my refugium that tended to itself without much help from me when I had my 90 gallon.

Very nice to have a spawn, did you notice any corals spawning triggered by the spawn of the clams?
I for usre would have restarted my skimmer to filter those out. Maybe collect some of the spawned material and have it in a small tank with it's own filtration?
would be very interesting to have a few anemones pop out following this.

Marc I am sooooo glad you were home with a camera. That is sweet that you got to document this

Glad that you had a chance to catch this event, well done.

Wow ... Great photos of the event. In a year you could have a tank covered with anemones !

Oddly enough, the very next night the BTAs in the main reef spawned again. The Rose (hereafter shall always be referred to as "she" or the female name "Rose" wasn't interested. However, her tentacles are more translucent, akin to what we often refer to as a bleached anemone. She's not nearly as vivid red with the deep pigment I'm used to seeing.

I did a 55g water change last night and set up the skimmer to pull out the meds and the other stuff. I also restarted the Carbon reactor. The water is more clear today, but the Pink branching Hammer coral continues to look shut down. The Toadstool Leather is fully open again.

marc reading this made me think i found the smallest little anem about 3 weeks after my tank did this
it was on the glass so i scooped him up and threw it in my 20 frag tank
it hasnt grown an inch and just moves around the tank
    nice pics as always

I'd like to see the tiny one. Have you tried feeding it anything?
  14. chappy's Avatar
i wil snap a shot of it tonight and a full grown 1
will try to put up pic tonight if not as soon as i get back in town sunday night
i have not tried feeding it
but i feed the monsters like 2 times a year

cant figure out how to post em here

Edited by Marc. They are hosted on Photobucket, so I clicked on the little icon with the tree in it (attach photo) and entered the URL.

Marc, This may be the stupidest question ever, but I was just sitting here wondering what would trigger such an event. I got to thinking about the fact that you just put up those ICE CAP retros, and wondered if they could have had anything to do with such a thing.

    Hi Nathan,

Honestly, I have no idea what caused it to happen. I was wondering if it was lunar-related, as in the 'new' moon phase began that night. I didn't think the lights would have much to do with it, but Icecap might like to get that kind of credit. hehe

I've had a couple of spawnings that I've dealt with. Regrettable since your tank was more mature and has nicer colonies but I survived with a simple Tetra Diatomagic Filter. The unit is discontinued but the product was so much easier than Vortex. It is a hang in tank unit and I ran it till a trickle came out and threw out diatom powder and reloaded 1-2 more times.

Micronized carbon can be used as a second coat if your water was clear to start with, followed by of course water changes. If you catch it the same day, or even part of day, it is not that difficult to correct.
