After seeing a blog or comment from Marc a few weeks ago, I realized that it had been awhile since I had cleaned out my biopellet reactor. After opening the NextReef SMR1, I was surprised that I was still getting flow for tumbling the media after I saw how dirty the plastic discs were. I took everything out and cleaned the interior of the tube, as well as the top and the plastic discs. I had set the biopellets aside after I had poured them out, and tried not to disturb them too much, except for removing them, then putting them back in. No rinsing of the pellets or anything, just the reactor. You can see in the following picture, that yes, we do occasionally need to clean our media reactors:
The same cleaning regimen should go for GFO, calcium, and carbon reactors. I also cleaned out my calcium reactor, which I had not done all year, and was surprised at how much detritus and junk had accumulated in the calcium media. It was a wasteland of filth when I emptied it out and rinsed the media. With everything cleaned up and reattached to my tank, my coral has never looked better. All the better for holiday guests to take in some tank viewing pleasure.
