Dosing pump hose slipped out, KH mess in cabinet, fix

Rate this Entry
This happened three weeks ago, but I thought it important to blog so others doing Balling out there might watch out for similar situations.

The thin hose that connects into my peristaltic doing pump's flexible tubing slipped out of it, the KH hose to be exact, and as a result KH liquid was squirted into the cabinet where it sits...

Actually, it happened twice. The first time I caught it some 8 to 10 hours after it slipped. Damage/mess was minimal. The second time, well, I think a few days had passed before I discovered, and the mess was significant.

Here is what the mess looks like, AFTER I wiped everything fairly dry, and let it alone for a day or two:

So, I used a small sized plastic cable organizer (the black thing in the picture) to ensure the hose doesn't slip out again. As I took these pictures I noticed apparently there are bubbles forming at the flexible tubing to hose connection, which doesn't seem very good. Might have to discover what is going on there.

Nothing similar every happened with the Vodka dosing, neither with the Ca or Mg dosing. The KH liquid must behave differently than the other liquids, I guess.

So, if you're doing Balling, watch those connexions.

I think it may be venturi effect to create the air bubbles you're seeing. There are hose barb connectors you can use between tubes, but they may clog up from time to time. Just another area to keep observing.
