Fungia Pays It Forward

Rate this Entry
They say where there's water, there's life. Here's my "resurrection" coral at it again. Tiny Fungia babies popping up from the plate's skeleton. The coral was burned by a Rose BTA, and died. Leaving it be, a few months later more life emerged. Look closely and you'll see at least two new polyps forming. A twinspot Blenny looks on from the right.

I've had so many new ones appear in my system over the past 30 months, there's no reason to think you wouldn't have similar results. The original plate that buds the majority of the babies is in the back of my reef, and has produced dozens of frags (close to 100, I'd guess). Many have been shared, and others remain in my custody. This one and a couple of others perished, but all budded out new ones when left in the aquarium.

Fungia plates are the coral that keeps on giving. Don't toss 'em out.

Edit 3/28/13: Picture added to show growth.

Edit: 1/15/2014: Same skeleton covered in plates that have grown.
