Extending the stand and canopy

Rate this Entry
As I continued my rebuild, I wanted to change the stand to hide the additional plumbing that was being added. I had extended the base of the stand to provide extra room for the sump, and that needed hiding as well. I had an idea that it would be possibly to add a vertical board to cover the sides. This would necessitate extending the canopy as well, which was not going to be an easy task. I would need to change how the canopy was hinged. Here is what I came up with.

I extended the canopy about five and a half inches. Using 1x6 poplar, I modified the base of the canopy, and made provisions to change the hinging from cabinet hinges to a piano hinge. The sides of the canopy were notched, which would serve as a socket for the vertical boards.

I cut a board at a 45degree angle and attached it to the base. The sideboards would fit into this key, and not be able to kick out.

Here you can see the sideboards, secured into the canopy I made some trim pieces to match the rest of the stand.

Looking very nice. Is white the final color?

Yup, white it will be. Painted to match my built in book shelves and room trim.
