Heaters

Hi all. Been following Melev since his early days.

I am reconstructing a smallish reef tank, around 50 gal including sump. I'm planning on including a controller for this iteration of my tank, and am stuck on the type/brand of heater to include. Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself, but I would like to order one soon. In my last iteration of this tank, prior to the rebuild, I had a heater that I'm not sure ever came on. The pumps and lighting kept it quite warm. This new design is using LED lighting and should be significantly less warm.

Here is the question for the community: I want a heating element that will function flawlessly and not need and integrated heat controller. That is what my aquarium controller is for. Any recommendations?

Most "good" non glass heaters come with a built in controller. I just set the one on the heater one degree higher than the Apex controller is. That way if the Apex doesn't shut it off, it should turn it self off. Mine is a Via Aqua 300Watt, that has worked flawlessly for 3 years now. I need to get another one as a back up just in case. I have some old spare glass ones if I got desperate.

I've been using Ebo Jager for years, and now Eheim Jager. I just posted up the new Cobalt heater review on the front page of the site two days ago, which would be great for your setup. If you can't get one that matches the tank size, you can definitely get two smaller ones that add up to what you need.
