Looking for some guidence and help

Rate this Entry
this is my first entry on reef addicts. I am looking for some advice and guidence. I have been in this hobby for about 8 years. I have let my tank go down hill when everything that I was bought would die. A few times i wanted to take down my 90 gallon but could not bring my self to it. Recently I found out that I have been giving wrong info from the LFS, I have installed a refugium with live sand, rubble rock, cheato, a bio pellet reactor and a reef octopus 6 skimmer. I still need to upgrade my lights.
I am upgrading to a 195 gal. demensions are 72x24x26. I am building a filter room 9' x 10' filter room in the basement, 2 60gal acrylic tanks for ro/di water and premixed salt water. I will be building a sump area thats 40" x 60" x 17" tall. Refugium area is 24" x 36". I am looking to have sps and lps corals.
equipment I am looking to run on this system listed below.
3 ecotech radion led lights
2 vortech mp40's
super reef octopus 5000
bio pellet reactor
fennix 810 heater
digital aquatics reef keeper elite with net.
external pumps i am still looking into
Looking for advice on any other equipment I may need to have a successful, thriving and beautiful reef aquarium. What good macro algae besides cheato?

Wow, that's not the post I was expecting after the first few sentences. Way to bounce back!

It sounds like you've gotten quite a bit of good gear so far. Maintenance is key, and water quality needs to be measured and tracked to keep it stable.

Cheatomorpha is really one of the better choices. If you wanted other plant life, mangroves would be fun to add some diversity, but remember the new system won't provide much in the way of nutrients. As it matures you can add more plants; too many at the beginning will result in starved plants that die off.

Are you going to add ventilation to the basement to keep the moisture under control? What about temperature control?

There is a small window in the filter room but I may need to put in a exhaust fan. I have about a 10 degree temp change from main floor to basement. I hope it will be enought, If not I will need a chiller.

In my 90 gal I am nursing it back from years I abuse. There's 2 long tentical anemones which have shrunk in size, 2 clowns (1 is the first fish I have bought 8 years ago) with a box fish, enormous amount of blue and green mushrooms. Could not get anything else to grow. I need to spend more time on making sure quality of water is there.

Definitely add a vent fan to suck the moisture out of the room via that window. I've seen basements soaking wet because of a lack of air circulation.

Thanks for the advice melev and cyano. New tank won't be up and running for a while.
