A sump with Mantis shrimp zones

Rate this Entry
A customer recently contacted me requesting a project that included a divided section to house two mantis shrimp. These two zones flow slowly into the skimmer zone, and then into the return zone. The display tanks will drain into the mesh socks. An external pump will push the water back up to the display tanks. The customer will drill the sump for the bulkhead himself.

The sump has three mesh filter bags, rather than the common 200 micron filter socks because they don't clog up as quickly.

The two Mantis shrimp will be in the front, and both sections will have an 8" DSB.

A small one would get an area 12" x 6" and then a Zebra Mantis would get the bigger section.

The Top-It-Off Deluxe kit by Aquahub was included, something new I'm going to be offering from my site.

The sump is 37" x 24" x 16"

You build some sweet sumps... Did you throw in the protean skimmer to?

That's an interesting solution to have your reef/fish and your mantis shrimp too.

No , he brought it along to see how it would fit in the sump.

I am using the deluxe kit by Aquahub and I love it ,, its very simple to hook up and much cheaper then any of the other products out there,, so I hope you have good luck including it in your sump designs ,,,looking forward to MACNA!!!!!! hope you might have time to have a beer and chat there,,,,

Yes, there will be drinking at MACNA. It's part of my annual ritual. Let's do that!

Looks great. Appears to be a next reef skimmer, correct?

You should put together a DIY sump kit with a sock holder, ATO switch holder and probe holders. As many people who DIY their own sump baffles I bet they would love to have some hang on/magnetic accessories to purchase from you. They're always so clean. My buddy just snagged a sump used that you built 5 years ago and it still looks amazing! :-)

I think I need to start building biodegradable sumps that need to be replaced at three years. lol

The future shop will have some acrylic accessories. The announcement will come soon.

Yes, that's a Next Reef protein skimmer.

Hey Marc, how much do I need to give you to include the Top-It-Off kit with my sump?
  10. melev's Avatar
What? You still want that sump?! LOL - you need to get me some dimensions after all. The kit is $50.

Of course I do Marc lol, here are the measurements for one of your masterpieces: 42 x 18 x 16 Model G-Modified Skimmer section 11" wide (skimmer 14 x 9) you can double check my measurements for the skimmer section since you have the skimmer. External pump type? (I was planning on using an internal pump, I have a mag 12) I need to know what size bulkhead you will use and what size hole I need to drill for it. Refugium 18 x 14 x 12, I'll bring the 50 for the kit when I pick up the sump. I will forward you the messages I have on our discussion if you want me to. I'm really looking forward to seeing it once it's completed.

I can't believe you are finally giving me the final dimensions. You must have built the stand at last, right? If you wanted to run an external pump, the Snapper Hybrid would be a decent choice. Problem is that it uses a 2" bulkhead and that means a 3" hole in an area that is barely 3.5" wide if the refugium is 14" wide. Best make it 13.5" then. So, don't drill it; just let you use the Mag 12 for now right? You initially placed this order 7/25/10!
