Tunze powerheads???

Rate this Entry
Hello all!

This is achilliestangman2357, my name was graciously changed by melev upon my request to my real first name. (less typing when im logging in)

Anyways the purpose of this blog is to ask if anyone here on reef addicts has had any experience with the powerhead brand called? i ask because i am tired of my crappy koralia powerheads and i cannot afford vortech's( other than the two brand new mp10's that i got for a total of about $37.85) So unless i find another deal where i can get two more vortechs for roughly $22 a piece my only option is to go with a different brand haha

So, if anyone has any reviews, info on what they come with, or even seen these in a friends tank please let me know because if these power heads are successful in other reefs then i am going to purchase them

Blake glad you asked I have been wondering about other brands myself. The vortechs are are expensive and i seems like there have been a lot of posts with people having trouble with them. Maybe it just appears that way

The Korallia pumps are cheap and short-lived. I don't even like looking at them in a tank, let alone trying to clean them up.

Tunze pumps are german-built and have good customer service. I've used Tunze in the past in my 55g and 280g reefs. There was a pump-flow-review a few months ago and it caused quite a bit of controversy. Vortech pumps did very well:

Mathematically, Tunze and Vortech pumps are often close in price when you factor in the controller modules. And if you want a battery backup, there's more money spent. In the end, it comes down to what you want your tank to look like and the ease of cleaning that components.

Now that being said melev, would you personally recommend tunze for a 100 gallon reef or no? i did read the article but i like to get a review from people i can actually communicate with (and the fact that the creator of reef addicts is the one with the experiencewith these power heads doesnt hurt either )

Also melev, i am specifically looking to buy this exact tunze power head: http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store/...s-gal-h-1.html

It seems to have the same if not higher flow than the mp10's that i have? so With your experience with these pumps should i go ahead and buy two of these and a controller?Remember my tank is 100 gallons yes but the measurments on it are 48' L x 24' W x 12 T ( a perfect reef tank short and fat )

If the flow number is accurate, that is. I don't know if the corrected numbers have made it out to the various vendors yet, or if upgraded parts have been installed to increase the flow rate as advertised.

I've had to clean a few of those, and screen that snaps on seems a little flimsy to me, so be careful taking it apart and snapping it together. When those first released, the C-clip that held it to the magnet broke quite easily, but I think that was resolved. The former Turbelle and Stream pumps were quite durable by comparison, providing a lot of flow and could handle a good scrubbing. The only downside (to me) was looking at them in my reef. They took up a lot of space and blocked my view of corals.

For a guy on a budget, these are a better option than Korallia pumps.

what was wrong with the koralias? im using them currently, is there something wrong or defective with them? if your considering tunzes, whats the difference? melev mentioned that it depended on what you wanted to see in your tank, if you use tunzes wouldnt they be same "eye-sore" as koralias?

The Tunze pumps are a little smaller and are gray rather than black. They are better built and have excellent customer support.

Korallia pumps don't last too long, usually about a year.

If you want a pump that seemingly lasts forever, Maxijet pumps are great. And now when you buy one, it comes with a conversion kit to run it like a stream pump instead of a single point of flow powerhead. The suction cup attachment is enormous though, something I'd like to see redesigned.

My next build is going to have a false side in it to act as a wave box so I dont have to have anything in the tank
