MASVC Meeting

So today our local reef club had its monthly meeting, I gave a slide show presentation on carbon dosing, which was segwayed into the raffle where the grand prize was a BRS Bio Pellet Reactor and Pellet Combo Pack (Donated by BRS). Out of all the other raffled items this one had the most tickets, I tossed 10 tickets in the pot knowing full well my chances were very slim because there were guys tossing 30+ tickets in the pot. But low and behold my number was called and I walked away with the grand prize.

In the back of my mind I always wanted to make the transition from vodka over to bio pellets but I really haven’t given much thought on how to go about it. I’m weary about going from one thing that has been working so well for me for the past 3 years and having to cross over without having something go wrong. I’m open for suggestions.

Nice score. I've been running bio pellets for over a year now. The transition is pretty simple. Go slow. Get reactor online with with 1/4 the recommended and gradually move up to 1/2 recommended. Watch your skimmer going nuts the first month or so. When the skimmer goes back to normal, add more bio-pellets. Also start decreasing you vodka dosing right away. Too much carbon dosing (vodka) will cause a cyano out-break.

Good luck, and keep us posted on your progress !

The only thing I can tell you is that most people say that isn't a good reactor for the biopellets. I've read that over and over and over so I tend to believe it must be true. You can get a better one from a number of sources, like Nextreef, Coralvue, and Two Little Fishies now. Something that will fluidize the pellets and keep them tumbling, usually at a decent rate. Mine is running at about 500gph, but it's a big reactor.

When I set up this tank, I went full on with 2-liters of media and didn't dose vodka at all. What are your current Nitrate and Phosphate numbers?

Thanks for the heads up Marc,

I have done a bit more research and I will postpone my switch over to pellets. I'm really in no big hurry to make the change, I'm almost afraid to do so.

The cost of those reactors are a bit out of the realm of what I would be willing to pay for them, I kind of look at it as it's not a necessity because the vodka is doing such a great job.
