New RO/DI filters from Melev's Reef

Rate this Entry
The fed ex guy came to my door today. (yay company!) And brought me this nice little brown box from Melev's Reef. I got new filters for my RO/DI unit I purchased from http://www.melevsreef.com/rodi.html in August of 2008. Since I don't have a tank right now, the unit is residing underneath my kitchen sink and provides me with RO drinking water. I kid you not that I get compliments on my water when guests try it. "What kind of water is this, it tastes really good." So that's just a side benefit I guess.

I wrote up a review on my local club boards when I got the unit and I'll copy it here for your reading pleasure:

Melev's Reef's RO/DI unit & TDS meter

http://www.melevsreef.com/ro_di.html <---the unit I got and where to buy it
I got one of these RO/DI units a few weeks ago. It was really nicely shipped and easy to hook up because he has a step by step photo instruction on his website. http://www.melevsreef.com/rodi_install.html

The unit itself is sturdy and pretty . For anyone that doesn't have an RO/DI unit and is thinking about getting one, DO IT! I will never lift another 5 gal bucket into my car. UGH just thinking about it makes me tired. Anyway, I bought a long tube to take the water from the unit over to the trash can i mix my water in (about 25 ft away from the unit itself), and it works out perfectly. I fill about 30 gals of RO/DI water in 7.5 hours.

The TDS meter (necessary to have IMO) read 000 after the first round...even though my tap water was reading 435!!!! I think the stuff I was BUYING at the LFS was still reading 6... so happy I finally bought this after over a year of stupidly buying from the store...

I just did the math, I'd get about 15 gals a week at the LFS at $.35 a gal... I spent $336 on water alone at the store not even counting the gas to get there ... anyway hands down best purchase for my tank I've made since TEK T5 lights last year

Great product and even better customer service.

After a year and a half the unit still runs great and looks brand new. Quality stuff. The only reason I'd get something different is to upgrade to the new model he's got for sale that does 150 GPD. Its a beast and would save a lot of time for those of you that run bigger tanks.

Man, I JUST ordered new cartridges for my FGuys unit, would have rather gone here(providing compatible which I see no obvious reasons why not)
    Maybe next time.
I like the tinted cartridge housings, mine is setup pretty much identical to these pics, and I think daylight might be affecting unit as I see green film algae start when cartridges get old.(mine are clear)

Perhaps you can put something up to shield those housings from daylight. Be sure that when you remove them for filter replacements that you clean them thoroughly. I would use warm soapy water or bleach & water to clean them, rinse them very very carefully and allow them to air dry overnight. The next day, reassemble - hand tightening only so you don't crack the housings.

    Thanks for the entry, Jessy.

Yeah, that's exactly what I've done.
It's happened twice now since I moved to where light hits.
I was thinking of bagging them or something to block light, maybe get longer use out of cartridges.
I also really use the back flow/flush to clean out alot, like every 5 g or so, cartidges have lasted alot longer since.

My nicely priced DI resin arrived the other day and is performing well.

I have to agree Jesse. I bought the same one in August of 08 as well. I just recently started seeing .05ppt on my TDS meeter so I replaced all 4 cartridges. Works great, but I am considering getting the new one. :0

I just got this email today.

    Marc,

The filters arrived sometime yesterday afternoon, and was installed successfully--thanks to your detailed instructions
Almost caused a man-made lake to occur in my kitchen in the process, but overall it's worth the change and now my TDS readings are back to normal!

    Thank you!

sorry for raising a dead blog but I stumbled on it and I am wondering why my unit does not have the logo on it?
  8. melev's Avatar
When did you buy it? There was a period when they didn't have an awesome sticker, but after a while I had a logo contest on Melev's Reef, and after that I started selling them with stickers. PM me your personal information and when you bought it. I'll double check and if you are in my records, I'll mail you a sticker for your system.
