Starting over with my tank!

New Sump

Rate this Entry
I'm building my sump and wanted some ideas from y'all! Its a 20 gallon high. Will have three compartments. Fuge will be the smallest because of availibility of space. I want the return bigger so my heater can fit in the space. The tape in bottom of tank shows where I was thinking of putting baffles. What ya think? I will have 2 returns whereas the skimmer section will get 3/4 of water from return and the fuge will get 1/2 water. Heres pic:

If you make the skimmer section 9" deep, will the sump have enough empty space for water drainage? 1" of water in a 75g is 3.74g. 1" of water in the sump equals 1.04g, so you'd need 4" empty inches across the entire sump to hold that 1" from the display.

The skimmer needs to be I 6" to 10" of water.

The NextReef reactor needs approx. 450 gPh flow.

    Update with pics above.

Maybe the piece #1 can be 9". And piece #2 can be 8". What do you think about the baffles? Piece number 3 and 4.

Honestly, I had a different idea in mind, but have to draw it, scan it and upload it. What you have will work though, so make #1 stay at the original height, and baffle #2 at 7.5" and baffles #3 and #4 can be the way they are but 7.5" tall. You don't need them shorter than the others.

t 10" I would have a good 5" before overflow. But bringing it down an inch sounds good.

    Okay thanks :-0

Ok, baffle #3 should be an inch off the bottom?
  9. melev's Avatar
Yes, 1 to 1.5" off the bottom.

Ok thanks Marc!! I have my plan!

Okay, so the final design will be:
    1 piece 10" by 15"
    2 piece 71/2" by 113/4
    3 piece 71/2" by 113/4"
    4 piece 71/2" by 113/4"

Piece 3 I wil have it 11/2" from bottom

I will run 1 pump for return
    1 pump for NextReef reactor

I run cold anyway maybe that will help my heater out...lol.

Thanks for all ya help Marc!!

Henry, make sure that those three baffles are 1/4" less wide than the internal space in the 20g Long. You want an 1/8" gap on each end; the baffles should NOT fit snugly, the silicone is what holds them and fills that tiny gap. Otherwise the aquarium walls may crack.

    Ok, will do, thanks Marc!

Finished siliconing in the last baffle a while ago. Now I just have to wait 24 hours for it to dry so I can do a water leak test. Will post pics a little later.

didn't you leak test tank before deciding to use it for a sump? Just giving you crap Henry, though leaking from chamber to chamber, unless extreme, will not make a difference.
  18. Hat39406's Avatar
Lol, I hope it doesn't leak. I used a lot of silicone on it for sure. Ya know I can't see, so I really did it by touch, lol, that's why I used so much silicone. Hahhahah Had to send wife yesterday to get me some more.

Sorry about not having an update with pics sooner but they may have a change in plans and I've been very busy. I possibly can smell a big upgrade coming!

I did the water test on the sump and I didn't have any leaks. I have new sump, protein skimmer, sock holder and new Next Reef reactor with new Mag5 pump sitting in my office waiting to be installed.

Will update soon when I find out if the upgrades a go.
