Tank Update

Rate this Entry

At BAYMAC last weekend, I acquired some new equipment and decided to take the time to de-uglify my tank. I had two "spare" clumps of Chaetomorpha happily expanding in the main display tank and the corals from the February frag swap were randomly scattered. Everything looks nicer and cleaner now.

CPR Aquatics had a booth at BAYMAC, so I bought a small Aquafuge to replace my makeshift AquaClear 70 refugium. It's much more spacious and easier to hold all my gear plus much more room for Chaeto growth. The rear of my tank look a lot better now since the Aquafuge and its light was actually meant to be a refugium:

Through my local Don't Break The Chain program, I recently got a large branch of green-tip hammer and mini carpet anemone. I also bought a bright green Caulastrea from the club's frag tank at the conference. They're all in my quarantine bucket for a few weeks.

Here are photos of the corals I got from the frag swap back in February:

My "Euphyllia garden," which I plan to be the center piece area. The hammer on the far right is not new.

Acanthastrea

Hairy mushroom (Rhodactis spp.)

Green Palythoa

Some kind of Zoanthus. I originally didn't like this color, but my roommate likes it a lot, and it has since grown on me.

These zoas were labeled "copper zoa" when I got them, and they don't look copper to me, nor do they look like man-eaters

Be careful with the green hairy mushroom... me and a buddy of mine are both battling them off like the plague. I bought a rock that had 4 or 5, now I have 15 plus in 4 months. They grow like wild fire! If you have them on their own rock they look good and are very hardy... but be prepared for them to grow out. I'm going to try to get them out of my tank in a week or two (once my lye gets in). I'm going to cut them back and give away frags (a lot of people still love them) then lye the small pieces that I can't scrape off the rock. Wish me luck!

Those zoas are great though! I'm trying to get a pink zoa or paly into my tank... just to add another color. I may find the patience to wait for a pink goniopora though... love those things. :-)

I've been told that they can be prolific, but I've had it for three months now and no sign of splitting. It could still be adjusting to the tank and not "felt" like spreading, but I've been keeping an eye on it.

Thanks about the zoas. I still want more but I want to mix in both awesome-looking ones and some "drab" ones for balance.

How are gonioporas now a days? I've read that strives have been made but they are still challenging.
