Quick picture update of War On Valonia

Rate this Entry
As requested by my friend dkbann (who happens to be watching my progress in order to decide if he'll start a new tank after his tank crashed, let's cheer him up to do so folks!), here is a quick and dirty picture update of my "War On Valonia". Mithrax crabs were my weapon of choice.

Some of the pictures aren't very focused, but I guess this gives a quick and dirty picture of how the War On Valonia is going on in this tank. You can still spot some Valonias, but they don't bother me in the quantities I have them now, and, I'm pretty sure the crabs will continue reducing their number.

There was one civilian casualty though....my Green Star Polyps.... the Mithrax crabs ate the 3 colonies I had. I had noticed it, but I thought they wouldn't be able to completely eat it before I noticed. Well, they almost did. Only a very small patch was left, it is in my quarantine tank now but I don't think it will survive (the QT tank is too hot during the day).

Nice progress! How many crabs did you add to ensure these kind of results?

Four crabs, but one was quite small when he arrived, so maybe I should say 3.5 :-)

That looks great! Four crabs in how big a system?

    - we've all had to deal with tank crashes. You get the opportunity to set up a new tank with better fail-safes and in time a new reef will emerge in your home again. Be sure to share your experience with us when you are ready.

sumpmonkey: the GSP seems to be recovering, I saw it extending a little its polyps yesterday (very little, but extending)! Thanks for the offer, but now I have hope that hardy one will survive!

melev: the DT is about 180L (it is a 60cm cube with about 10cm substrate, that would be 50G in a 23in cube with 4in substrate, small). If they start getting aggressive towards my corals (just a Zoa, a Palithoa and a Hammer) I'll start feeding them shrimp pieces.

That's generous of you. They'll be happy with any type of algae they encounter, but could grab meaty foods if the opportunity presents itself.
