Critters in the Cube of Fun

Rate this Entry
I just realized by making successive blog posts that I am monopolizing the "Recent Post" section on the right side of the home page, I apologize and promise this is my last blog entry for a while.

The algae bloom came out in full force a few weeks ago, but is now mostly gone. I actually grabbed several pieces of the fast growing macro lettuce algae and tossed it in the refugium. It is growing well and I plan on putting a few pieces in the display tank from time to time to feed the herbivores.

I am going to attempt document just about every creature I see in the aquarium and get pictures of as many of the as I can. I do not have a fancy camera with a macro lens so I am a bit limited, but it is none-the-less fun to try and get some good pictures.

The first few critters are hitchhikers:

Tough to see but I believe these are Tunicates, they are stationary, transparent and by my estimation filter feeders:

Next, perhaps a mushroom coral? Takes little pieces of frozen food and gobbles them up in slow motion:

This little guy was fun. When I first got my rock setup he was attached in a location that did not suit his needs, so he curled up, puffed up and floated away. He found a sunny spot, settled down and has been there ever since. Someone identified him as a phymanthus anenome, and I think they are correct. He gobbles down frozen food in a snap.

Using the Critter ID (which I absolutely love) on Reef Additcts found out that this little lady is a Black Stomatella. I have seen several of them, this one being the biggest.

I have also added a clean-up crew that entails a couple emerald crabs, fun to watch.

Okay, I am sure someone else can confirm this especially Melev with all the experience he has with these but I think that your "phymanthus anenome" is actually a Majano and should be terminated right away. Take the rock that he is on out of the tank and bake it in the oven. You may think this is overkill which it is but if I am right that one Majano will turn into hundreds in a matter of months and you will be ready to PIBTAWA.

I disagree, I think it is a phymanthus anenome

Googling pictures of both, I still come to the conclusion that it is a Phymathus anenome. The tentacles seem to be rather unique and the little guy in the tank matches the pictures of the phymathus.

I'd love a better picture personally.

Just so you know, blog entries can be longer and you can insert a bunch of images in your entry. Unlike message boards that limit keystrokes and only allow 4 to 10 images, on ReefAddicts you can make a full entry and talk all you like to share your latest news in great detail. This design is intentional to allow each member to express themselves fully without interruption. Comments beneath allow everyone to discuss your entry.
