lighting: what kind of light is this?

Rate this Entry
The light that came with my 55g used tank supports two 55 watt power compact whites and two 55 watt blue actinic bulbs but has an additional light bar of some kind running along the back edge that I would like help identifying. It is a thin little tube and emits a bluish lite that almost looks like a black light but probably isn't. It is also wired separately from the main lights.

The light has no labels but the guy I bought it from said it was a coravue knock-off and that he was told to just leave the little blue light in all the time. Can anyone give advice as to what kind of light this is and how I would use it? Thanks in advance.

sounds like a type of moonlight since it is wired separately, is it a glass tube or a string of leds

I'm going to go with moonlight, since I've never really come across a power compact/t5 hybrid light... they're always either metal halide and t5 or metal halide and power compact it seems

thx for your responses. It is a glass tube running the length of the whole fixture. How do I use a moon light? I looked on melev's reef for the article on lighting but couldn't find it. thx

moonlight is for your night cycle it should be on when you turn off your main lights. Does the bulb have a wattage rating on it. I have not seen a pc/t5 combo either

OK. After several people have said "Huh," I have decided it is possible I don't know what I am talking about. Therefore I took the light apart and learned this:

    - it has two fulham workhouse 5 ballasts in it, part number wh5-120-L and says it is approved for 128 maximum watts on each one. It currently has one 4 pin straight-line Jebo 55w blue and one 4 pin straight-line CA PL-L 55w 6500K white bulbs (plus the tube which everyone seems to think is a moon light.) Each ballast has an additional 4 pin plug that I intend to order two more bulbs for.

    - My current plan is to purchase 50/50 55w white\actinic bulbs from jebo.com. They are $22 there which is considerably cheaper than other places I've looked. (plus shipping)

    Thx for reading

I ordered my bulbs tonite from Foster and Smith. Evidently jebo.com is OOB but still has their website up. Never could place an order with them. Anyway...
