Water Flow in a 120 gallon / 5 Ft long Tank.

Rate this Entry
I Plan on putting in a mag drive 7 return pump with a head flow at 4ft approx 480 gph which equates to about cycling the tank water about 4 times per hour. I'll split the returns to 2 with a SCWD and place them just off of center. I also have 2 Rio 1700 Power heads the the ends of the tank.

Do I need more water current in the tank??? If so, I was thinking about the Koralias, just not sure what size/flow rate and position. Are there any good ideas for which water pushers need to go where?? Upper section, middle section and bottom layer of the water column?

Thanks,
Aaron

I don't think a Mag 7 will have enough strength to push into two SCWDs. One is okay, but the SCWD reduces the flow by 20% (that's what is used to make the gears turn and change the flow pattern). I ran a closed loop with a SCWD and a Mag 7 for a couple of years. As a return pump, the additional head pressure vertically will probably leave you less than impressed.

I like one powerhead up near the surface to keep the water rippling. Then a few mid-height, and at least one near the substrate pointed upwards slightly to avoid weak flow in that area while not moving the sandbed too much.

A Mag 7 will push 1 SCWD though right? Thus splitting theo/p into 2 separate streams/currents.

Here's what I did with the closed loop: http://www.melevsreef.com/closedloop.html

Thanks, Nice work, Esp. the cleaning tips for a mag pump and the double the pipe size opposite the output section. i.e 1/2 inch ='s 1 inch o/p pipe.
