Building my 20 gal long sump from vague plans found on the internet and answered questions from here. Thanks Melev. I am about ready to plumb and saw the writing about drilling two holes in the return line to create a siphon break in case of power outage. Where exactly does that go? I thought it said about X inches below the water line but that doesn't make sense to me. Please answer and explain. Thx

you want the holes just below the water lever of your main tank. that way when the water starts backflowing, air gets in and stops it. when the pump starts up it raises the water level and the hole is under the surface so you don't hear it.
i couldn't do this so i had to install check valves.

Drill them 1/2" beneath the water line. To do this, look at your return plumbing, and mark that spot with your finger tip. Get a helper to turn off the return pump, then lift the plumbing up out of the water to expose that spot where your fingertip still is. Drill that spot. Now drill another one nearby at the same height. Replace the plumbing where it was, and turn the return pump back on.

Now unplug the return pump and watch the results. Plug it back in and watch what happens next, then you will understand this better. It will be noisy, but that's on purpose. You want to break the siphon of water draining into your sump.
