Biopellets....whats the real deal?

Rating: 3 votes, 4.33 average.
Ok so everyone in the reefing world knows that black friday = new reefing equipment

Anyway...I'm thinking of buying a biopellet reactor, or at least the kit to convert my BRS GFO reactor to a biopellet reactor, but I am still a bit lost in all of the info regarding biopellets. Hopefully you guys (and girls) can help me answer some questions regarding biopellets.

#1: What is the best brand of biopellets (money not being an issue) and why?

#2: What is the best brand of biopellets (taking cost into consideration) and why?

#3: What types have you used and how have they worked? Cyano issues? Corals bleaching?

#4: How do you "dose" your biopellets (how many cups, etc.) and how large of a system/bioload do you have?

#5: How old should a reef be before you start running biopellets?

Any other questions/comments/etc. are absolutely appreciated!

Thanks for your input
- Max

Hey Max, I can't answer any of ya questions but I'm glad ya asked them because I want to know more about the subject myself. Let me ask you though, do you know of any on-line aquaria supply having a sale? If so who? Thanks- HAT

Lots of them that I will list (hopefully this isn't breaking any rules, I honestly have no ties to any of these companies...I'm a 16 year old kid)

Bulk Reef Supply: 10% off EVERYTHING, expires 11/24 @Midnight, Code: blackfriday10

Salty Supply: Various great deals on all gear, specifically: 20% off PRODIBIO orders of $200+ BLKPROD, 15% off additive orders over $159 BLKSEA, 10% off metal halide bulbs BLKBULBS, 15% off all heaters BLKHEATER, all these codes are only good on 11/26 (black friday)

Marine Depot: Various deals on all kinds of items, ends 12/13

That Fish Place: Various deals on everything, specifically Instant Ocean users...Reef Crystals 200gal boxes only 44.99, Normal 200gal box of IO is only 38.99

I feel like I sound like a car dealership commercial...
I'm sure there are more deals out there....these are the only ones that came through email lists etc.

    Hope all of this helps

I am using 1 liter of seemed marine ecobak pellets. My system volume is roughly 170 gallons. In a month these have cleared up my nuesance problems. I have not tried other brands and I am using next reef smr1 reactor.

im using warner marine eco bak, reason being better contact surface for bacteria growth, also they do not slime over, filler free. im running a nextreef mr1 with ubgrade kit from nextreef(bigger plumbing and a diff disc) with a sicce 1.5 pump. http://reefbuilders.com/2010/05/10/w...osing-pellets/

thanks midnight and stangchris, it seems that the ecoBAK pellets are viewed as one of the best. Also, do either of you dose any biological supplement (MB7) or anything else?

I was told that Brightwell Katalyst is the same as WM Ecobac (sp?) but can't confirm. I use mine in a Phosban 550 reactor fed by a MaxiJet 1200. I got them both off a local club group-buy. I am just a little over a month into it and while my nuisance algae problems have not magically gone away, the problem stopped getting worse and slowly got better. Still looking for more improvements.

I do not dose anything but BRS two part. oh and mine is fed from my overpowered return pump. I chose ecobak because I had seen others' results in their tanks. I have not seen anyone who is using the NP Biopellots that the "smr1" was designed specifically for.

I dose fuel from aquavitro, for amino acids, and two part, also feed coral frenzy. I've seen the brightwell and they are totally different.

Ive also been using WM's Ecobak pellets simply because well they are the only ones I have tried. When I bought them I had the chance to speak with John Warner about them and I really liked what he had to say so I was sold. Honestly though i'm sure they are all just fine. I'm about 3 months or so into using mine and I have only good things to say about them. I used to dose 20ml of vodka into my tank daily and the pellets have taken that chore away from me. I no longer have to think about NO3 or PO4 issues except for having to change some media out of a reactor every 6 months to a year.

General consensus on the web is about 50/50. Some people love them, others hate em. But isn't that true of any product?
  12. melev's Avatar
Pretty much. I hope I'm a 50% lover of them since that is my plan.

I'm hoping to be in the 50% as well... going to use the remainder of my GFO and then put the EcoBak pellets online.

sedor, why do you have to change out the media? I thought that the biopellets will dissolve by bacteria. you only have to add more into the reactor right? i have been using EcoBak for a month now too. good PE and growth with my sps. my LPS does not like it so much somehow.
