OK reaching out to smarter people. My tank is now two months old and yes I may have added some corals at 4 weeks which is too fast. My tests at that time showed 5 or less nitrates so figured i was cool. i got this set up used with all the rock and sand and even moved about 40 gallons of the original water. I never really got the ammonia spike or the brown algae but I have lots of green algae now. I figured since I moved so much stuff that I may have skipped that stage. i test for ammonia Nitrates, phosphates, calcium, saline levels. all good except for phosphates at 2 which is probably a hidden clue. well in the past 3 weeks i have had nitrates spike. Some other details... 125 gallon wet dry filtration protein skimmer metal halide and compact flourscents, 4 power heads. nice stacks of live rock (all hand scrubbed before placing in tank).
I treat the tank with essential elements and strontium. and a couple doses of iodine.
To date i have one favia three feather dusters, one leather coral, 5 small mushrooms, a rock covered with brown sun polyps. my local fish store has advised me that i may still have cycling troubles. i have on two occasions added bio spira and nitrate reducers. The tanks seems happy with the additives. but no change in the nitrates. i feed with clypoeeze ,half dose of live proto-plankton and oyster eggs. i have two fish a pair of clowns who love my long tentacle anemone and a handful of crabs and snails and 2 brittle stars in the rock work.
i have recently invested in a 4 stage water filter as i was using tap water for make up and the original 80 gallons of new salt water. in the 2 months i have done 2 water changes at about 30 gallons. the last one with pure water. and i have added about 10gallons recently of distilled makeup water. Any ideas would be great.
