Ok, so I just snagged a killer deal. 500 scored me a 75 gallon reef ready tank, stand, canopy, outer orbit metal halide and t5 48" fixture, bubble magus skimmer and mag return pump.

Problem is this tank is kinda dirty.. and I really want everything to be clean before I start moving my 29 gallon to it's new home. I'm also not going to be using my old live rock/sand in this setup either. I want a fresh start with no contaminants... That damn red algae I had at first that looked kinda cool has spread, and while it's nowhere near as much of an eyesore as hair algae which I have none of, I really don't want to introduce this to my new tank. I'm going to be ordering about 100lbs of macro base rock, use some fresh live sand and fill in the rest with whatever sand you guys recommend.

I know I've heard marc before using vinegar, but how much is needed? I was kind of thinking to hook all the plumbing up, have everything good, fill it with freshwater and run however much vinegar I need in it for a few days to clear it all out? Is that right? I know you're busy marc but I could use some input from you and the rest of you pro reefers on here

    Hey Dread grats on the deal that does sound like a killer deal. I don't have the experience that Marc has but as for cleaning your tank i would suggest filling it up with hot water and about 2L of vinegar and throw all the duty plumbing in the tank and let it sit for a day. Then just use a razor blade(would not suggest a razor blade on acrylic) and some elbow grease on the tank. I cleaned a fresh water tank that way and it worked great, just make sure you stay away from your seems. As for the skimmer i have had my eye on them for some time now but if you need advice i am sure you can find some in this tread.

    Congrats...

    I purchased a used sump that was a Trigger Systems custom 70 gallon. I plugged the return holes and filled it with water. Dumped 2 gallons of white vinegar into it, stuck a Rio 1400 pump in one side with a hose going to the other and let it circulate for 48 hours. All the old Coralline Algea, and nasty gunk was completely disolved. There were a few spots that I rubbed clean with a wash cloth. Very easy and cheap. Once clean I rinsed with fresh water. Had a brand new sump.

    I would do the same with the 75 Gallon, maybe set it up outside (on a patio or something) and do the cleaning. The vinegar smell inside the house is too much for me.

    Trust me, all you need to use for the cleaning is vinegar..
