Scientists have documented its existence in freshwater, brackish and marine water, and discovered it hidden in fossils as well. Often referred to as “blue-green algae,” it is non-motile because its cells do not contain cilia, yet has the ability to spread via filamentous branching that bud and form new colonies elsewhere.
