  1. Where does the power go?

That's a good question, and any hobbyist that has been reefing for a while begins to try to figure out what the tank costs them, electricity-wise. I've done a couple of blogs pertaining to the 280g reef, found here: http://www.melevsreef.com/labels/electricity.html

My overall estimate for the 400g is about $85 per month, but it may be worth figuring up the total wattage again now that it's 2014. My latest electric bill came in, and the graph showing usage for the past 13 months was ...

  2. Day 98: A paly that doesn't necessarily live up to its name

I have had a certain type of Palythoa in my system for years. It is nicknamed "Purple Death" but it rarely appears to be even close to what I see online. Here are some examples displayed by Googles Images.

  3. Making the jump to LEDs

So I finally decided to take the plunge into LEDs and after much debate I have chosen Ecotech Radion Pros. I picked up a couple Gen 1 standard models back in October but they didnt seem like enough for my tank so I went ahead and upgraded them to Pros in November. So what I have now is three Radion Pro Gen 2s over my 210 gallon mixed reef which replaced my three 14k Phoenix 250 watt Metal Halides.

  4. Bluelife Phosphate Rx

I am curious if Bluelife Phosphate Rx is a good means of controlling phosphate? I know a few of you guys on here dose this. Would it be a cost effective means?

    Could it replace GFO?

Also I noticed they only sell it in 1 oz bottles. How many drops would be in a bottle?

    Thanks guys.
  5. Full moon coincides with Peppermint Shrimp fry release

Saturday night, just after lights out... I was in the kitchen with the overhead lights on. The reef was already heading into sleep mode, but I noticed my Peppermint shrimp was out and about, very active. I'd noticed a few days ago that she was carrying eggs, and I had a feeling she was getting ready to release them. I'd not witnessed this in a very long time, and quickly dashed off to get my camera to capture the event.

The tank light was off, so I relied on the flash. Starting off ...
