A First Timer's Tutorial

Rate this Entry
Welcome to ReefAddicts.com. We wanted to give you a brief tutorial to show you around what functionality we have ready for you to start messing with.

First things first...you need to create a profile. (We need not remind you to choose your screen name wisely. It is how you will be judged from here to eternity.) Fill out all the information that you can, as these will eventually ask for more information about your tank and other information you're going to want to log.

Next you can comment on the ReefAddicts current release of articles. We encourage you to discuss and engage, adding in your own relevent information and personal experience. Don't be afraid to comment on someone else's comment. Let your hair down and tell us what you really think.

Also on the list of important to-do's is for you to create your first blog post. This is how you introduce the Addicts to your tank and your pictures. Think of it as your own personal thread. You'll get subscribers to your blog and comments just like you would in any online forum.

If you have something that you'd like to contribute to the Addiction on a larger scale, we welcome EVERY ADDICT to submit content for our article section. If you have an idea, a DIY, a video...let us know. If we feel it feeds the addiction, we'll post it up for the whole world to see.

Join in the community. Find your local reef club in the Groups section and join up to connect with reefers in your area. Create your own group for Favia Feens or Button Polyp Lovers Anonymous. And don't forget to let everyone else know about your local events coming up on the calendar. We don't want to know about little Suzie's 4th birthday party, but if you're having a backyard fragswap or a full on conference, what the hey!, post it up. We're all addicts here...who doesn't love getting together with other like-minded individuals?

And as always, stay tuned as we roll out more functionality in the coming weeks. You won't be disappointed.

    Congrats on the launch!

    Some bugs:
    • Links of categories on left side bar on main page links to dev-linuxweb01.4wmt.com.
    • Clicking on search box at the upper right redirects to user settings, making it useless to search for anything. You can still do an advanced search however.
    • Members don't have rights to create Groups of their own.
    • Profile Picture is activated but not avatars. As you can see, members dont have pictures on their replies and when they join groups.

Will add more if I see more.

Thank you for the input. We are going to fix these issues and others on Sunday when Ed gets back home. He worked on the site for our Jan 1 rollout during his vacation!

    Update:
Custom Avatars are enabled: Click Settings, then Edit Avatar to upload your own avatar. They display 60 x 60, so try to keep it simple so we can tell what it is.

Email notifications are going out: Newly registered members confirmations; PM received; Blog subscriptions. If you have it selected, you'll be notified when someone interacts with your blog, or tries to contact you.

Members Listing added to Navigation bar: This way you can find your online friends and add them. Whenever they post something new, you'll see it in the "My Friends' Activity" widget on the right side of the screen. If you don't add friends, that box will be boringly static. Keep it dynamic, add some buddies.

I am not clear on one issue. If I were to do a build post as I go and update do I post under that blog. I assume I do not start a new post. Sorry I think I just thought it threw myself.

You would start a new blog. People will be able to follow along by looking at all the blogs your username created. You may want to keep them in order by saying something like Blog 1, 2, 3....

if someone says they are subscribed to my blog do they just get updates if update a current thread or if I start a new entry.

If they subscribe to the blog (not 'subscribe to the entry'), every new blog you post will result in an email notification to each subscriber. I subscribed to a few people and I get notifications from comments as well as the latest entry.
