Ecotech's ReefLink arrived

Rating: 5 votes, 5.00 average.
Yesterday I got my shipment from Ecotech Marine. It included the new ReefLink device that was on display at MACNA two months ago. This connects to your home (or business) network to communicate with the Radion LED fixtures and in the future, wireless Vortech pumps.

Since I'm a beta tester, I'll be providing feedback about how it works to Ecotech. Here are some teaser pictures.

During the programming mode, you'll see several colors on the indicator.

I've got it hooked up with a ethernet cable to the port in the back of my router.

Now I can log in from one of my computers (PC or Mac) and adjust the lights wirelessly.

Here is the EcoSmart Live page, accessible via any browser. It shows my Radion fixture, my lighting schedule and the profile of intensity.

Since hooking it up, I already saw a much nicer version of the 60g cube. The little preview button at the bottom right lets you observe the lighting period for a 24 hour period in less than 90 seconds. The lights are fading into brightness over hours, then gradually drop off after high-noon all the way into dusk and finally moon-phase.

I've only been running the Radion for a week but I already like it better now that I'm using it via ReefLink and EcoSmart Live.

Can't wait for it to make it to production.

The unit doesn't currently work with Vortechs you say? When do they expect this function to come online?

That is supposed to happen very soon. Maybe before the end of the year.

Is the Reeflink Vortech compatible yet?

Also, do you know if it is able to update the firmware of other devices? For example, would it be able to update my MP40wES pumps from 2010? Or can I still only do that with a new Vortech?

The ReefLink is still communicating with Radions at this time. And it has updated the firmware within itself as well as within the Radion fixture. It should be able to do the same for Vortech pumps when they all start working in unity. That will be great.

For now, to update an older Mp40w ES, you can take your driver to another hobbyist's home or to your LFS to get it updated. Or you can mail your driver to Ecotech to get it updated, and then use it to update any other pumps you have. A couple of years ago, I took one of mine with me to MACNA so they could do it for me. Easy Peasy, right? I've not had to do it in a while, so I forgot the procedure but I'm sure the documentation is a few keystrokes away.

Thanks for the info! I'll check with my LFS to see if they can do it. I don't recall seeing any Vortech's on their tanks or shelves.
