How would you do flow in my tank?

I've mentioned before that I don't think the flow in my tank is good enough. It's a 120, and it has 2 koralia evo 1050s and a maxijet with the propeller mod. I don't count my return since it's not very strong. I'm going to have some funds available from selling at a frag swap next month, hopefully $200-300. If it were your tank, what would you do? Obviously scrapping them for Vortechs isn't feasible. Would you start over, add more pumps, put in a closed loop, or something else? I could easily move my 1050s into my 50g frag tank, it needs help too. Working within the financial limitations, tell me how you guys would approach this. I want higher flow, so I can keep SPS/LPS. No softies in there. I have a Reefkeeper Lite, so I can use that strip for an A/B wavemaker as well.

    How many GPH of flow is coming out of those two Korallias? They look like they are too small in your tank to be providing adequate flow.

    That's pretty weak. For a 120g, I'd want 6000+GPH minimum. That's two Vortech MP40s at about 85% flow.

    So, shop around for some used gear that will get you 3000gph each, or three pumps that move 2000gph. Even more if you want to have fun.

    With your budget, you might be limited to other Koralia pumps. Perhaps 4 of the 1400 models would get you to the total flow you need, and with 4 heads you have more opportunity to randomize flow. Depending on where you get them, that would run you around $220-$240. 2 of the Koralia Magnum 8's would run about the same price, but they are rated for 3200 gallons each.

    It's looking like the Tunze streams may be a good idea. I can get those one at a time and replace the koralias. I can also get the controller for them when I'm done. I'm thinking maybe three 6085s.

    That would work too.... but I don't think the 6085's are controllable (variable speed), although they could be used on on/off timers. There is also the added benefit that the tunze's are smaller than the Koralia magnums.

    why not save another 150 and get one mp40 and then for one end of the tank and then put the two koralas at the opposite end for counter flow...that is how mine is set up until I can get another mp40. the flow in my tank is more than adaquate, I even get some small wirlpooling due to the narrowness of my tank.

    I like the idea of the mp40, especially looking at used prices. My problem is that I'd love to eventually do 2, but the space between my display tank and frag tank is less than 2 inches so another won't fit on the right side. Here's an old pic:



    Is it worth it to just get one and do other stuff on the right side?

    Why not put one or two on the back and have none on the sides?

    I've never really worked with powerheads on the sides, but I was thinking about that too. I take it that it works just as well?

    what about a closed loop with a reef flow dart. You could even run the return around the top if you dont want more equipment in the tank. I have a 100 gallon tank with a snapper and an MP40 and it is plenty of flow with out much equipment in the tank.

    I traded for another pump that runs 1500 gph as well as switching out maxijet mods to add another 600. Everything seems happier now, my blue millie is showing polyp extension for the first time since I've owned it.
