Why not put one or two on the back and have none on the sides?

    yes, i believe it is

I like the idea of the mp40, especially looking at used prices. My problem is that I'd love to eventually do 2, but the space between my display tank and frag tank is less than 2 inches so another won't fit on the right side. Here's an old pic:

Is it worth it to just get one and do other stuff on the right side?

why not save another 150 and get one mp40 and then for one end of the tank and then put the two koralas at the opposite end for counter flow...that is how mine is set up until I can get another mp40. the flow in my tank is more than adaquate, I even get some small wirlpooling due to the narrowness of my tank.

That would work too.... but I don't think the 6085's are controllable (variable speed), although they could be used on on/off timers. There is also the added benefit that the tunze's are smaller than the Koralia magnums.

It's looking like the Tunze streams may be a good idea. I can get those one at a time and replace the koralias. I can also get the controller for them when I'm done. I'm thinking maybe three 6085s.

With your budget, you might be limited to other Koralia pumps. Perhaps 4 of the 1400 models would get you to the total flow you need, and with 4 heads you have more opportunity to randomize flow. Depending on where you get them, that would run you around $220-$240. 2 of the Koralia Magnum 8's would run about the same price, but they are rated for 3200 gallons each.

    That's pretty weak. For a 120g, I'd want 6000+GPH minimum. That's two Vortech MP40s at about 85% flow.

So, shop around for some used gear that will get you 3000gph each, or three pumps that move 2000gph. Even more if you want to have fun.

    1050 each.

How many GPH of flow is coming out of those two Korallias? They look like they are too small in your tank to be providing adequate flow.

It was actually a bunch of turquoise paly colony. The color was fine, I just don't have actinics over the frag tank yet and they don't look very nice in there. I'm going to try making some combo cap frags as I go on too. They look nice like that.

Nice to see you posting again, Mits. In your old frag tank, what was that brown pile to the left of the Hynophora? I've never seen an all brown gonipora before. Or is that a brown sea hare?

I love your combo caps. That's a sweet showpiece in your tank.

Add a bunch of snails to combat that hair algae.

I read a lot on here, but I've been busy fighting my tank for a while. I also suck at tank photography and I like to add pics if I post, so my lack of skill deters me from posting at times. After I posted I took a look at both frag rack pics and really noticed how much bigger my green hydnophora is now compared to January 21 when I took the first photo. I know it's at a different angle, but it's grown a lot in only 2 months. That's my mother colony. I'm keeping it to frag and because it's pretty, there's just absolutely no good place for it in the display. Also, it's a beast and I don't want it stinging anything in there either.

Hey Mits, I'm glad to see your tank is doing better. Your corals are looking healthy. I'm also glad to see ya back, was wondering where ya were. ;-)

Wow... that really is a simple frag rack setup. I'm glad I checked this out! :-)

It could be a combination of things, and now is being picked upon by opportunistic shrimp. Sometimes they heal, sometimes they don't make it. They do have the power to regenerate and heal, if it isn't too badly progressed.

Metric is great in all, until you want to eyeball something more than a centimeter.

Ooohhh... touched a pain point there Let me guess, your teacher at school who taught the metric stuff was not nice... yes, childhood traumas last... Happened with me and French language class, I know....

Anyway, sorry for the metric comment, it was my engineering mind, I couldn't resist.

Now, Jesse has a good point. I'm an amateur woodworker and most of my tools and books I bought while traveling to the US, so they are inch based. So I tend to think woodworking in inches (just inches, not feet and inches). I don't understand completely why, but, to design furniture I find it more comfortable to do in inches than centimeters... maybe it is because the inch is something you can relate to (approximately the width of a thumb) and it looks aesthetically pleasing to the eye... like Jesse comments in terms of estimating widths? Probably I guess.

Now for some humor: the Imperial system is superior in many ways!! It develops fractional math competencies! Yes, like, why on earth would you learn to recognize which /32 or /64 fraction is larger in an instant except if you needed it to pass an exam? It is also great for the economy, as this blog post illustrates. Or almost illustrates, as nothing bad happened (praise the Lord). How? Well, with all the funky conversion constants it is not infrequent for mistakes to happen, right? After all most people are not very mathematically inclined. Well, mistakes mean something broke, spoiled, killed, which in turn means purchase a new one! Which of course means more sales and therefore more jobs!!! Like, think about it, a tank crash due to incorrect dosage calculation is great for the economy!!! (this is humor, remember!!! ok, not very bright humor.... :-) )

I had a brittle star fall apart just like your describing. It began to hide a lot when it lost 3 of its legs completely. After about a month though they had all grown back. I think all you can do is wait and see what he does. Mine has been doing very well ever since he regrew all his legs.

Levels look good. I can't really say if it's starvation or not, but it definitely just reminded me to toss some sinking pellets into my tank since it's fishless :-\
