  1. Acclimimation of a fish

CPR sent me out their First Aid Deluxe Kit earlier this year, and recently I acquired a lawnmower blenny for the frag tank at the recommendation of a club member. I've been dealing with some algae in that tank and the hermit crab, emerald crab, red legged crab and a few snails weren't keeping up.

I figured I'd give the First Aid acclimation kit a try. Hooking it up on the edge of the frag tank was easy.

  2. Treat your tank sitter right!

Less than two months ago, my tank sitter's reef crashed. A RBTA was devoured by a vortech pump, and the nematocysts wiped out everything. He broke down the tank, cleaned everything out and waited for the cycle to finish. A week ago he told me that the water was testing perfectly, and a couple of test corals from the LFS were doing well, so I bagged up some corals from my reef to get him jump started. Some were small, others bigger. It helped both clear out some space in my reef and keep him ...

  3. DFWMACNA - the price is about to go up.

To the right of this screen is a giant $85. That's the current price for attending all three days of MACNA next year.

On our club's site, we have a good discussion going on. You might want to read it to understand why it's worthy:

This one entry by Drew is the one I wanted to point out:

  4. It lives!

The $80 starfish continues to live. I had to make some space in the refugium for it to get easier access to the sandbed, even though you'd think with five arms it could figure out how to push some leaves out of the way to get where it wants to go.

Here's the story of the original impulse buy, something very uncharacteristic ...

  5. A change in biopellets usage

On February 6th of this year, I started running 2 liters of Vertex biopellets in my system, and over that 7.5 month period I was able to maintain zero nitrate and zero phosphate. Granted, my system has a DSB, live rock, a skimmer and a refugium, but so did my 280g reef. I've not had to dose Phosphate Control nor use GFO once with the new tank. And no vodka dosing either. I've only done a handful of water changes in that time. Maybe 600g, possibly.

Two weeks ago, I hooked up a ...
