  1. Skimmer Swabbie repaired

The Skimmer Swabbie offered by AvastMarine.com is a great way to keep the neck of the collection cup clean. A motor rotates a squeegee within the riser, as often as a timer allows. I've been using the Skimmer Swabbie for about two years. A few months ago, the motor stopped and I ordered a replacement.

Fortunately, my tank sitter came over and helped get it swapped out because it was on my To Do list. A few weeks later, it was making strange noises so I called up Justin at Avast ...

  2. Dart pumps, repaired once more

I like the Sequence Dart pumps, but like anything they too need to be repaired as parts give out over time. I looked at the twin pumps that run 24 hours a day, and was surprised to see salt creep and crusty stuff amassing in their vicinity. Yuck!

I called up the people at Reeflopumps.com and they shipped me out new seals and four new bearings. When you have the pump pulled part for the seals, it's only a little ...

  3. A fancy upgrade to my RO/DI setup

Six months ago, I ordered two components for my drinking water, and yesterday it was finally installed. The first was a bladder tank. This holds the drinking water (RO water, not RO/DI) under pressure for quick on-demand water use. It holds 3g of water, so I can use it to make coffee, ice tea, and fill up water bottles like the wind.

Blue tubing was run from the RO system behind the refrigerator and dishwasher to the bladder tank under the sink. A small hole had to be drilled through ...

  4. Calcium Reactor - replenished for the next 8 months

The Calcium Reactor was quite depleted after 8 months of running on the 400g, so I cleaned it up and refilled it with more media. I disconnected it from in my sump and placed it inside a styrofoam cooler, filled it up with Muriatic Acid & water and let it run for 30 minutes. It was then taken outside and blasted clean with a garden hose to remove the acid, then I was able to wipe it out thoroughly with a sponge.

It was filled up with the larger grade media from Caribsea. I topped ...

  5. The Magic Eraser

This product has been discussed by aquarists, debating the value versus risk to the tank. The Magic Eraser can be purchased at super markets and places like Walmart. I found a larger box one day and bought it to try out. I think this box cost around $5.50 and came with four sponges, for lack of a better word.

About three months ago, I saw some chatter about the Magic Eraser on Facebook and how those people ...
