  1. Hair Algae Eradication Experiment - successful

Having run two previous successful tests on algae patches in my tank and having no negative results to date, I thought I share the process.

    I used the following-

    1 cap full of peroxide
    1/2 tsp baking soda
    Baby medicine eye dropper
    Small plastic dosing cup
    Turkey baster

Mix the peroxide and baking soda together in a small cup and mix until the baking soda is dissolved but viscous. Suck up into the eye dropper about 1ml of the mixture. ...

  2. Starting over

After 6 + years of keeping an SPS dominated tank I have been forced to start over due to a slow and painful tank crash. I'm not quite sure what to attribute the crash to whether it was old tank syndrome (if that is even a real thing), two hurricanes and prolonged power outages with no generator, sheer size of my SPS colonies and my not being able to keep up with my ca2 or dkh demand are all viable possibilities etc etc.

Anyway, after deducing that at least one problem was likely that ...

  3. My Hurricane / Reef Story

Well, we finally got internet access back last night so I thought that I would update the group on my reef’s status and how it made out with a 9 day power outage caused by Hurricane Irene that swept the east coast a few weeks ago. I was prepared only with a D battery operated air pump, air stone and a turkey baster thinking that this would suffice. I was wrong.

  5. New Algae Bloom ID and assistance with clearing it up.

    Hello all,

I have recently had a new bloom on algae that resembles HA and Bryopsis. I am looking for a positive ID and assistance with it's eradication. This algae began to grow on my maxima clam shell a few weeks back and has since spread to an adjacent piece of rock. As you know, clams do not like high flow so, that area is not devoid of flow but was specifically chosen becase of the relatively low flow in regard to the rest of the tank as well as placement to get the best light. ...
