  1. Tank Update

At BAYMAC last weekend, I acquired some new equipment and decided to take the time to de-uglify my tank. I had two "spare" clumps of Chaetomorpha happily expanding in the main display tank and the corals from the February frag swap were randomly scattered. Everything looks nicer and cleaner now.

CPR Aquatics had a booth at BAYMAC, so I bought a small Aquafuge to replace my makeshift AquaClear ...

  2. Nothing Has Died, plus BayMAC and Florida

No update in months, but all is well. I should start each post with "nothing has died" since that's always good news for a beginner, so let me start over:

Nothing has died. Most corals showing growth, especially the frogspawns and hammers, and worms are more numerous--and that's a good thing 'cause I love my spaghetti worms. My tank reached a point where I was able to "safely neglect" it, although I still gave it weekly water changes. Actually, that's almost all ...

  3. My First Frag Swap

On Saturday I went to my first frag swap, hosted by my local reef club, the Bay Area Reefers (BAR). Here's my loot in the quarantine bucket:

It was a little overwhelming actually. There were swarms of people, a pleathora of raffles, and the picking rounds seemed to flash before my eyes. I couldn't find everything I was looking for but I'm very happy with what I got. For some reason I ended up ...

  4. Fungia and Spirorbis

This is Maturin, he's acclimating to my tank:

I wasn't planning on getting another coral so soon, but I was visiting the much raved Aquatic Collection for the first time and spotted this beautiful orange Fungia. My first corals were doing well, I was planning on a plate anyway, and Fungias are known to be very hardy, so I decided to nab him on the spot. He's less than 2 inches across, so ...

  5. The Little Things: Copepods and Bacteria

I discovered lots of copepods in my tank! I haven't seen them since college biology lab. I noticed white specks scurrying along glass before the lights came on. I had to use a magnifying glass to recognized them, and I also spotted several females carrying their egg sacs. Whoohoo! I suspect that they arrived with my ISPF order that I introduced last week.

My tank is still cloudy, and it might be a bacterial bloom. It might be getting better but it's still cloudy even though I've been ...
