I am a bit confused on why you want to run an external skimmer In your sump? The askoll 1500 pump draws 70 watts which may not seem like it will add heat, but every degree matters if you're running halides or don't have a chiller. You have posted before about how you are building a fish room, so I'm wondering why you wouldn't put the sump/skimmer/etc there instead of under the stand? Or possibly you could build a small cabinet next to the tank almost like an endtable to hide the external skimmer?

Ah. First off, don't drill the penductors. I did and as i was told, it's an issue now. A check valve is the way to go, if you can come up with a good system.

I always recommend a sump that is 16" tall. Anything taller is tough to work in, and difficult to install or remove equipment.

i might just put it the sump and make the sump shorter if i make it 15 or 16 high i think i can get it in but have to take it apart and get it in and out just kills the idea of not having to drill my penducters or run check valves. at 24ins it would have held all the water in a power outage. Wishing i would have got the sss 6000 now.

You may be able to adjust the output plumbing slightly, trying to run it 1" higher than it is currently. See how that works for you. I know you said you can't put it on a stand due to clearance above the cup, but how much space do you actually have?

I have found that if the water level in my sump raises above the recommended operating height it floods the skimmer cup. I just built a stand under mine to keep it at the correct level but if you can't then the level needs to be the 8-10" they recommend.

Fortunately you can have a glass shop cut you a new piece of non tempered glass and drill it and reassemble the tank. good reason to drill sides for a non display tank....smaller piece. we will wait for the write up on re-sealing the tank.

i dont drill 55s because of this...... (but i have drilled a tempered tank before... and that is a sound you never forget!!!! )
(im sure the rubbermade tube cost less then the glass drill bit.... and you can re-use it for something else, or give it back to your significant other when your done!! lol)

No, you won't have to pay a fee to pick it up. The Hazmat fee is a transportation fee. A pint can would be enough for your project, with two applicator bottles (one may clog up and you don't want to be stuck unable to finish the project). Use #3 and get a tiny tube of #16 for any needed patch work.

How much do you think id need for a 20h x 32l x 24w with intake skimmer and return section
  12. DJ in WV's Avatar
yea just looked and is a 30.00 haz-mat fee pre can. Might have to take the 2 hour drive into pittsburg to get some stock. Wounder if that is charged at the dealers as well

Will do, I've got some 1/4" acrylic scraps down in the shop.
  15. melev's Avatar
Yes, that's correct. Let me know how it works for you.

Really?! I've got a couple gallons of MEK on hand, but can't get Weld-on without paying huge haz mat shipping.
  17. melev's Avatar
I prefer using AcryLite FF or GP to build sumps. It's a good brand and works well with Weld-On #3, #4, and #16. If you can't get it locally, you can try USPlastics.com as well as NationalPlastics.com Another solvent that I've been told works well is "MEK" but I've never tried it. You will need needle applicator bottles as well.

Contact a sign shop, not a glass shop in your area.

My friend Wes just got the Reef Octopus 3000 and had the same metric issue, but he got two couplings that were metric on one side and US standard on the other. That way he could plumb his skimmer externally to the sump.

think im down to these to skimmers now http://www.reefdynamics.com/INS250-P...r-p/ins250.htm and http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_ViewIt...0&child=CV5175 kind of leaning to the ins250 since it made in the US

Not much for problems if your handy. I run one right now and I just had to spend some time with a file and my fittings to sand them down a bit to fit. You can order metric plumbing, but it depends on your needs.
